Aging is part of life and for some it involves changes to their health and ability to care for themselves. Those struggling with memory issues especially require close supervision and a structured routine that family members are hard-pressed to provide. Still, it can be difficult to consider that their needs can best be met in a setting outside the home.
Understanding the option of memory care and its unique advantages can make the decision-making process easier.
The benefits of memory care
A specialized care environment
Declining cognition can make even the simplest tasks, such as brushing teeth or dressing, difficult and frustrating. This can result in constant anxiety and confusion. In a smaller, more controlled environment, people often find these tasks easier, with the aid of specially trained caregivers who can provide prompting and cues. Also, memory care settings are structured to bring out interests and preferences of each resident, which then are tailored into activities that feel familiar and instill a sense of accomplishment and purpose, vital to quality of life.
24-hour staff with advanced training
Just knowing specially trained staff are always nearby for your loved one around the clock is one of the biggest benefits of memory care. Whether it’s help with getting dressed, bathing, monitoring medications, assistance with dining, activities or simply being a trusted best friend, staff in memory care units understand the specific challenges and needs of those with dementia.
Improved wellness
While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, communities with memory care programs have reported a higher quality of life for residents in several areas, including reduced medication and medication side effects; fewer falls, injuries, and hospital visits; increased nutrition and wellness; and greater independence and social interaction. As many as 75% of memory care residents even experience improvement or maintenance of mental functioning and the ability to walk.
Socialization
One of the major advantages of a memory care setting is how it can help facilitate interaction and socialization, encouraging residents to chat, play games or enjoy hobbies together. This is so important, as a person with dementia often tends to isolate themselves, and that lack of social interaction can actually further contribute to memory impairment. Research has shown that increased social interactions can help individuals with memory care conditions have an improved mood and quality of life.
Family is family again
We all want to nurture and receive care from those to whom we are closest. But the strain of trying to meet the special needs of someone with memory issues can be harmful both to the loved one and to the family caregiver. Moving a loved one into a memory care community can offer the caregiver the ability to “just” be a daughter or husband again—and in many cases, can actually be a welcome relief for the one with dementia.
A checklist for choosing the benefits of memory care
To get you started, here’s a brief checklist of questions to ask when touring a memory care community whether in person or online. Add any other topics that matter to you.
- What level of care does the community provide? What personal assistance can residents expect? Staff-to-resident ratio?
- What type of training has the staff received? Is it ongoing?
- What specialized programming is offered? Pet therapy? Music therapy? Fitness or wellness programs?
- How is the community secured? Are there safe outdoor spaces?
- What medical services are available? How are emergencies handled?
- What meals are provided? Are special dietary requests, such as kosher meals, accommodated? How is food served? Are escorts to meals available?
- What is the monthly rate for housing and care? What services does that rate include? Are rooms private or semi-private? How do prices vary for each?
Trust your instincts. As you learn more about each community, ask yourself if it feels right, if the residents seem content and at ease, and if the overall environment is a positive one.
