8 Things to Look for When Touring Independent Living Communities

When you head to the grocery store, you most likely take a list of the items that you feel you must have in your pantry, as well as extras that would be nice to have—“luxuries” that add some zing to everyday life. It’s the same when touring independent living. You’re shopping for the lifestyle that has what you need and what you want to make every day special. So making a list of those things ahead of time is a good idea.

More than a place to live, independent living can be an opportunity to continue to grow mentally, spiritually, and socially—that’s our promise at Peregrine Senior Living. Here are some tips to help you with your search.

Touring Independent Living: what to look for.

1. A warm welcome. From your first contact, how does it feel? Are you greeted with smiles and made to feel at home? Is there a buzz of vitality in the air? Breathe in the atmosphere and note whether it suggests a thriving and bustling community. Happy people make the best neighbors!

2. Exceptional staff. In addition to the management team, be sure to meet as many of the staff members as possible. Ask about their credentials and whether they receive ongoing training. Also inquire about turnover rates. Do the people you meet seem happy in their jobs? Are they interacting positively with residents and families?

3. An appetizing dining program. As Julia Child said, “People who love to eat are always the best people.” Mealtimes are a wonderful opportunity to not only savor culinary excellence, they can bring you together with interesting people and lively conversation. When touring independent living, ask about the menus, selection of entrees, attention to dietary needs, use of local ingredients, and more. Be sure to have lunch or a dinner in the community and observe the wait staff and the atmosphere. Does it both entice, and satisfy? Is the dining room relaxed and inviting?

4. An array of comfortable residences. No two seniors are exactly the same, which is why choice is so important when it comes to choosing your new home. When touring independent living, get the information you need about floor plans and residence design. Check out a model apartment and note kitchen appliances, bathroom size and safety features, finishes, cabinetry, storage and whatever else matters to you.

5. A busy activities calendar. With all the free time you will have (remember, daily chores will be done for you!), it just makes sense to have a calendar of events and activities chock full of fun and companionship. Review the current activities calendar as well as a few from the past and see what keeps residents of the community busy. Even if you’re more of a loner, just knowing there is a wide range of things to do feels good. It could be a card game. A concert. A special outing to a nearby art gallery. A movie and popcorn. Art classes. An outdoor barbecue. Happy hour with friends. Touring independent living can give you an idea of how you could fill your day with whatever you choose—fun, friends, or solitude. It’s up to you!

6. Lifelong learning. Hungry to know more? Independent living is for you! Lifelong learning improves memory, increases self-confidence, keeps you sharp, helps you meet others, reduces stress—you get the picture. Find out what types of programs and events are offered. At Peregrine Senior Living, we partner with local colleges and organizations to provide a lecture series to help foster intellectual growth for our residents that can be easily shared with family and friends.

7. Excellent attention to care. Even if you are in great shape and enjoying your independence to the max, it’s reassuring to know that a caring, professional team is on-site 24/7 should you ever need assistance. When touring independent living, be sure to ask about what levels of care are available as needs change, how staff receive their training, and provisions for emergencies. Is there access to a primary care physician? To rehabilitation services? The more you know about the caring philosophy of a community, the more secure you’ll feel about living there.

8. Independent living that celebrates who you are. You’ve spent a lifetime caring for others. You’ve worked hard and helped others succeed and grow. Now it’s your turn to spread your wings and explore what’s out there! When touring independent living, ask if there are programs and services that help you nurture your physical, mental and emotional wellness. At Peregrine Senior Living, we are transforming the aging process, helping each resident carve out their own path filled with engaging lifestyle opportunities. We call it The Peregrine Way™®.
